Before you start trading on a stock exchange, it is always wise to pay attention to the opening hours. By doing so, you can determine within what time frame you can place an order.
It is also important to keep a close eye on the holidays. Some stock exchanges close several days in a row. If you don’t pay attention, you can get stuck with your shares involuntarily. With derivatives, you have to pay extra attention. You often pay a daily financing fee, which can make holidays expensive.
In some cases you can invest or trade outside the official trading hours. We also call this investing pre-market & investing after-hours. The broker where you have created an account can offer this possibility. They make sure that there is a market for the shares outside of the stock exchange.
Investing outside trading hours does have some disadvantages. The first disadvantage is that the volume is lower. It can therefore take longer before an order is executed. Another disadvantage is that transaction costs are usually higher.
This is also caused by the lower trading volume.

The days on which the stock exchanges close are normally announced in advance. On each country page on trading.info you can see exactly on which days the stock exchange in question closes. However, sometimes the stock exchange can close unexpectedly.
This only happens when a very unusual event occurs. An event that is so extraordinary that it can cause the stock markets to collapse. By closing the stock exchanges, there is time for the panic among investors to diminish. Some stock exchanges automatically stop trading when prices fall by more than a certain percentage.
What happens more often is that trading in a certain share is temporarily halted. This is done when one share collapses.
It is important to remember that the different stock exchanges influence each other. Especially large stock exchanges can have a strong influence on the prices of other stock exchanges. This is because in our global economy all countries and companies are interconnected.
For example, many people follow the opening of the American stock exchange with a tense breath. The American stock exchange is the largest in the world. When things do not go well there, it is more likely that other stock exchanges will fall as well. You saw this to an extraordinary extent during the credit crisis of 2008.
When you trade actively, it is therefore wise to keep a close eye on the opening times of other major stock exchanges. The activities on the other stock exchanges do influence the results you achieve with your trades at another stock exchange.

Please note that the various stock exchanges are located in different time zones. We have therefore added the local trading hours for your convenience. In some cases, the clock are pushed forward once a year. In that case, the time may deviate one hour from the times mentioned on this page. It is therefore advised to always verify the exact trading hours within your broker account.
International exchanges work with different currencies. It is important to take this into account. When you trade on an international stock exchange, you are dealing with an exchange rate risk. For example, the stock exchange of Japan is listed in Japanese Yen. When the Japanese stock exchange rises but the value of the euro against the Japanese Yen falls, you can still lose money with your investment.
Are you going to invest in other stock exchanges? Then it is wise to analyse how the currencies used by these exchanges are performing. By doing so you can prevent your returns from disappearing because your currency performs badly against the currency used by the stock exchange.
When a stock exchange is closed, you can often still place an order. Depending on the settings you use on your brokerage account, orders from the previous day are simply pushed forward to the next day. However, it is important to pay attention to this. When the stock exchange opens, the price of a share can jump quite a bit. This can be disadvantageous for you.
How is this possible? This is possible because many things happen during the period that the stock exchange is closed. These events influence the supply and demand for the various shares. For example, if negative news has come out in the meantime, the stock market may open lower the next day.
By using orders that guarantee a certain price, you avoid losing a lot of money when the next trading session starts.
