Background information on the Spanish stock exchange
The Spanish stock exchange was opened as early as 1831 and has been located in the Palacio de la Bolsa de Madrid stock exchange building since 1893. The Spanish stock exchange was taken over by the Swiss stock exchange operator SIX in 2020.
The general stock market index of the Madrid stock exchange is the IGBM: it contains 113 companies, including the 35 companies included in the IBEX-35. You can also trade in emerging Latin American companies with the FTSE-Latibex Index on the stock exchange.
The Spanish stock exchange is always closed on weekends. This is also the case with all stock exchanges in the world.
The IBEX-35 is the most well-known stock index of the Bolsa de Madrid or Madrid stock exchange. Each stock within this exchange has a different weight. The maximum weight that a stock can have is 20%. This prevents one company from becoming too influential in the index’s price.
The opening hours of the IBEX-35 are the same as those of the Spanish stock exchange. You can trade the index and the stocks in the index from 9:00 in the morning to 17:30 in the evening.
Shares on the Spanish stock exchange are traded in euros. Keep in mind that your investment may decrease in value when your currency becomes stronger compared to the currency of Spain.
