History of SunPower
Research projects on solar energy were carried out in the lab of a professor at Stanford University. Professor Richard Swanson founded EOS Electric Power with two co-founders in 1985. In 1988, the name of the company was changed to SunPower. The company produced solar cells.
In 1993, the Sunpower back-side contact solar cell powered Dream solar car from Honda won the race from Darwin to Adelaide. This race, the 3022 long Solar Challenge, crosses Australia. The company Cypress Semiconductor invested 8 million dollars in Sunpower in 20002. The company opened branches in Bavaria and the Philippines in 2004. In 2005, the company went public.
Companies acquired by Sunpower
- 2007: SunPower acquires the company PowerLight Corporation. This is a large-scale solar energy systems company.
- 2010: The company acquires Europe’s SunRay Renewable Energy for $279 million.
- 2011: The company concludes an agreement to acquire Tenesol SA.
- 2013: SunPower acquires the company Greenbotics Inc. This company manufactures robot solar panel products and services. These products and services are used by large solar power plants.
- 2018: in that year SunPower acquires SolarWorld Americas. This acquisition will enable SunPower to expand its domestic production capabilities. In 2018, SolarWorld Americas’ large plant in Hilsboro, Oregon was also acquired.
Do you think these acquisitions will contribute to Sunpower’s results? Then it may be smart to buy Sunpower shares.
Reliability guaranteed by Sunpower
The SunPower solar panels are so well-built that they will function properly for decades to come. In 2017, the company launched the best warranty conditions in the solar industry. With this guarantee, the company guarantees energy performance and production quality for a period of 25 years. This guarantee is given despite the many external influences, such as varying temperatures, severe weather conditions and possible ageing of the solar panels.
In terms of energy yield, the company guarantees a yield of 98% for the first year. In the following 24 years the maximum degeneration is 0.25% per month. After 25 years there should still be an energy yield of 92% left. That is considerably more than the conventional solar panels. After 25 years they guarantee an output of 80%.
Do you think this promise will increase sales? Then it might be a good move to invest in SunPower shares.
Division of production activities
SunPower decides in 2019 to split the majority of its production activities into a separate company. The new Maxeon Solar business will be based in Singapore. The company will produce solar panels in France, Malaysia, Mexico and the Philippines. SunPower will focus on commercial and residential energy storage and solar panel systems in the US.
