Company history

When it was founded in 1944, the company’s name was Kyunsung Precision Industries. It is then a manufacturer of steel tubes and bicycle parts. In 1951, the first bicycle, the Samchully, is made. In 1952, the company’s name is changed to Kia Industries.

From 1951, Honda-permitted small motorbikes were built. Later, Mazda licensed trucks were built from 1962 and Mazda licensed cars from 1974. In 1973, the company opened the Sohari factory. This was the company’s first integrated assembly plant.

The new dictator Chun-Doo-hwan forced the consolidation of the industry in 1981. Kia was forced to stop making passenger cars. The company had to concentrate on making light trucks. In 1986, Kia returned to the automobile industry. The Mazda-originated models produced by Kia, such as the Kia Pride based on the Mazda 121, were made for sale in South Korea and for export to other countries.

Hyundai Motor Company gets a share of the business

In 1997, there was a financial crisis in Asia after which Kia declared bankruptcy. In 1998, an agreement was reached with the Hyundai Motor Company. The deal gave Hyundai Motor Company a 51% stake in the company. Through subsequent divestments, Hyundai Motor Company now owns about one third of the company. At the same time, Kia Motors Corporation partially owns 22 subsidiaries of Hyundai Motor Company, with ownership percentages ranging from 4.9 to 45.37 per cent.

Kia overtakes Hyundai

Kia brand cars are selling better and better. Kia is no longer the little brother of Hyundai. In Europe, 122,000 new Kia cars were sold in the first four months of the year 2020. That is slightly more than the 117,000 Hyundai’s sold in Europe. In the Netherlands, the differences in sales numbers are much bigger. In the first four months of 2020, 2.5 times as many Kia cars were registered as Hyundai cars.
