History of SunPower

Research projects on solar energy were carried out in the lab of a professor at Stanford University. Professor Richard Swanson founded EOS Electric Power with two co-founders in 1985. In 1988, the name of the company was changed to SunPower. The company produced solar cells.

In 1993, the Sunpower back-side contact solar cell powered Dream solar car from Honda won the race from Darwin to Adelaide. This race, the 3022 long Solar Challenge, crosses Australia. The company Cypress Semiconductor invested 8 million dollars in Sunpower in 20002. The company opened branches in Bavaria and the Philippines in 2004. In 2005, the company went public.

Companies acquired by Sunpower

• 2007: SunPower acquires the company PowerLight Corporation. This is a large-scale solar energy systems company.
• 2010: The company acquires Europe’s SunRay Renewable Energy for $279 million.
• 2011: The company concludes an agreement to acquire Tenesol SA.
• 2013: SunPower acquires the company Greenbotics Inc. This company manufactures robot solar panel products and services. These products and services are used by large solar power plants.
• 2018: in that year SunPower acquires SolarWorld Americas. This acquisition will enable SunPower to expand its domestic production capabilities. In 2018, SolarWorld Americas’ large plant in Hilsboro, Oregon was also acquired.
