About the company FIAT
FIAT is a well-known Italian car manufacturer until 2014. These 4 well-known letters represent the words Fabbricia Italiana Autimobili Torino. The last letter refers to the original location of the company. Turin was where the company was founded in 1899. The company’s headquarters are still in Turin.
The early years of FIAT
In 1899, Giovanni Agnelli decided to start a car factory of which he himself would be the director. With the 24 cars produced that year, FIAT’s start as a car manufacturer was a fact.
How did Fiat convince consumers of the good quality of the cars produced by the company? They did this by delivering successful results during various car rallies. In 1908, the company made the transition to America. This early move allowed the company to grow considerably.
The Fiat brand and many other car brands
The company’s car business is not just Fiat. In 1979, Fiat was a car factory in which the brands Fiat, Lancia, Abarth, Autobianchi and Ferrari worked together. In 1984, the company expanded to include the Alfa Romeo brand. In 1993, a further expansion with the Maserati brand followed.
The successful new Fiat 500
One of the most successful Fiat models is undoubtedly the Fiat 500. The first ones came off the production line in Turin in 2007. The first original Fiat 500 was made there 50 years earlier. The new 500, even though the car is a lot bigger, is clearly inspired by its well-known small predecessor.
The new Fiat 500 with its retro design became a success. The entire fleet in the first year of production sold out within two weeks. In 2008, the new Fiat 500 won the title car of the Year. More than 2.1 million copies of this model have now been purchased.

In 2010, shareholders decided that the company should be split. This is how separate companies were created. The car business was transferred to Fiat S.p.A. Fiat Industrials focuses on the company’s other activities. Then there is Fiat Power Trains Technologies. This company is involved in producing engines for industrial applications. In addition, this company produces gearboxes and the engines for Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia.
Merger of Fiat and Chrysler
In 2014, the companies Fiat and Chrysler merged. This is how Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (FCA) was born. The merged company consist of the following two subsidiaries:
- The former FIAT group became FCA-Italy. This subsidiary includes the car brands Fiat Alfa Romeo and Lancia, the engine manufacturer VM Motori and the tuning division Abarth.
- The former Chrysler group became FCA-US. This subsidiary includes the car brands Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and RAM Truck, the Street and Racing Technology tuning division and the Movar parts and service division.
FCA’s main office is located in Lijnden. This village is located west of Amsterdam.
No dividend payment and completion of merger
In May 2020, both Fiat Chrysler and Peugot announced that no dividend will be paid in 2019. According to both companies, the decision was taken because of the corona crisis. According to the two companies, the discussions about a merger between them are going well. The deal could most likely be completed by the first quarter of 2021.
Before you buy Fiat shares, research whether you think this merger will be beneficial for the company. If this is the case, you may consider an investment in the company.
